Share

A single-source comparison of every UAE residence visa route in 2026, with cost, validity, flexibility, family sponsorship and the trade-offs between them.

The UAE has seven main residence visa routes, each with different cost, validity and benefits. Picking the wrong one costs you flexibility and money. Here is the 2026 side-by-side comparison.

Employment Visa

Sponsored by your UAE employer, 2 years, includes WPS salary rights and end-of-service gratuity. Lapses if you spend more than 6 months outside the UAE. Employer pays all costs. See the freelance vs employment comparison.

Investor Visa (business owner)

Self-funded through your UAE free zone or mainland company. Lets you invoice unlimited UAE and international clients. 2-year validity, renewable while you own the company. Our PRO Services handle the process.

Freelance Permit Visa

Self-sponsored through a freelance permit (GoFreelance, Dubai Media City, IFZA, SHAMS, Fujairah Creative City). From AED 7,500 total, 2 years. Lets you invoice unlimited clients without creating a company. See the freelance permit guide.

Family Sponsorship Visa

Sponsored by a UAE-resident family member (parent, spouse, adult child). Minimum salary AED 4,000 + accommodation (or AED 5,000 all-inclusive) for spouse and children; AED 20,000 for parents. See the family visa cost guide.

Property Owner Visa

Self through DLD-registered Dubai property ownership. Minimum property value AED 750,000 for the 2-year visa. 10-year Golden Visa needs AED 2 million property. See the property Golden Visa page for the 10-year route.

Retirement Visa

Self-funded for UAE residents aged 55+ with either AED 20,000 monthly income, AED 1 million savings or AED 1 million UAE property. 5-year validity, longer than most other routes except Golden Visa.

Golden Visa

10-year renewable, no employer sponsor, does not lapse while living abroad. Family (spouse, children of any age, parents) sponsored on same 10-year term with no salary threshold. Qualifying routes: investor (AED 2 million), property (AED 2 million), entrepreneur, specialised talent, outstanding student. See Golden Visa service.

Rule of thumb: if you can qualify for the Golden Visa, take it (10 years, no renewal headaches, does not lapse abroad). If not, pick the route that matches your work: employment for a salaried job, investor for business ownership, freelance for solo consulting, family for a dependent, property for an investor who likes a Dubai home.

Frequently asked questions

Which UAE visa is cheapest?

Freelance Permit visa from AED 7,500 total (permit + visa + Emirates ID + medical). Second cheapest: Family Sponsorship at AED 3,800 to 5,200 if a UAE-resident sponsor meets the salary threshold.

Which UAE visa is longest?

Golden Visa at 10 years, renewable. Retirement visa at 5 years. All other routes are 2 to 3 years, renewable.

Can I switch between UAE visa routes?

Yes. Cancel the current visa, then apply for the new route. Breeo handles the sequence so there is no residency gap. Common switches: employment to investor, investor to Golden Visa, freelance to employment.

Does any UAE visa not lapse if I live abroad?

Golden Visa does not lapse at all. All other routes lapse after 6 months outside the UAE. For frequent travellers planning extended absences, Golden Visa is the only option.

Can my spouse get her own UAE visa?

Yes through any route (employment, investor, freelance, Golden Visa). Many couples set up both independently so each has their own residence not dependent on the other's visa.
