Dubai Trade Name Rules in 2026: What Gets Approved, What Gets Rejected
A clear guide to Dubai trade name rules in 2026 covering what the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and free zone authorities accept, what triggers automatic rejection, cost and the trademark layer most founders miss.
Picking the right trade name is one of the first and most frequently botched steps of UAE company setup. Rejection rates on first submissions sit around 30 percent because founders miss naming rules that are not obvious. Here is how to get the name approved first time in 2026.
Who approves trade names
- Dubai mainland: Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) through the Invest in Dubai portal.
- Free zones: each free zone (IFZA, Meydan, DMCC, DIFC, ADGM etc.) has its own trade name reservation portal.
- Dubai Chamber: no separate approval; chamber uses the DET-approved name.
- Ministry of Economy: required separately for trademark registration (optional but recommended).
Automatic rejection triggers
The following cause immediate rejection with no appeal process:
- Religious terms: Allah, Islam, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, etc. Islamic finance uses specific pre-approved formulations like Shariah.
- Political terms: party names, political movements, geopolitical regions used as a company identity.
- Names of countries, cities or government bodies: UAE, Dubai, Emirates, Dubai Municipality, RTA, FTA. "Dubai XYZ" with Dubai as a prefix is also restricted; must use "XYZ Dubai Trading" or similar reversed form.
- Names of international organisations: UN, WHO, NATO, World Bank.
- Royal family names and titles: Al Nahyan, Al Maktoum, HH, Sheikh.
- Common nouns with no distinguishing word: "Trading LLC" alone will not pass; must have a distinguishing identifier.
- Deceptive activity indication: name must match actual trade licence activity. "Dubai Bank" when the activity is not banking.
- Offensive language: any term the authority deems obscene, inappropriate or disrespectful.
Required naming conventions
- Trade name must consist of three parts in order: distinguishing word + activity indicator + legal form.
- Example: "ABC General Trading LLC". ABC is the distinguishing word, General Trading indicates the activity, LLC is the legal form.
- Professional licences typically require the founder's own name in the trade name (e.g. "John Smith Marketing Consultancy").
- Free zone companies use "FZE" (single owner) or "FZ-LLC" (multiple shareholders) as the legal form.
- Length limit: usually 60 characters maximum (varies by authority).
- Arabic name is required alongside English for mainland companies.
Trademark layer
A DET trade name approval only means no other UAE licensed business holds that same name. It does not protect you as a trademark. Trademark registration is separate:
- Register through UAE Ministry of Economy's Intellectual Property Department.
- Cost: AED 10,000 to AED 12,500 per class (name, logo, slogan can be separate classes).
- Timeline: 6 to 12 months from filing to registration.
- Protection: 10 years, renewable.
- Covers UAE only. Separate registration needed in other GCC countries, Saudi Arabia, etc.
Reservation process and cost
- DET mainland: AED 620 reservation fee, valid 180 days. Submit via Invest in Dubai portal.
- Free zones: AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 reservation fee, valid 60 to 180 days depending on free zone.
- Review time: 1 to 3 working days.
- Transfer: approved trade names can usually be assigned to a different legal entity you own, with authority approval and small fee.
Common first-time rejection reasons
- Using a country or city name as prefix (Dubai XYZ, Emirates ABC).
- No distinguishing word (just "Trading LLC").
- Religious term misunderstood as neutral (e.g. Baraka interpreted as religious blessing).
- Royal family surname by coincidence.
- Deceptive activity indication (name says Bank or Insurance when activity is different).
- Already-reserved name by another UAE licensed business.
- Trademark conflict with a UAE-registered trademark.
Submit 3 to 5 trade name options in order of preference rather than one at a time. The authority usually approves one from a shortlist, saving multiple reservation fees and submission rounds. Breeo pre-checks every name against DET records before filing.
Breeo includes trade name reservation and 3-option backup in every setup package. We also handle UAE trademark registration separately for brand protection. See our Dubai mainland setup or talk to our team.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Dubai trade name reservation cost?
AED 620 for Dubai mainland DET. AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 for most free zones (IFZA, Meydan, DMCC, DIFC). Reservation is valid 60 to 180 days depending on authority.
Why does DET reject so many trade names?
Common reasons: country or city name as prefix (Dubai, Emirates), religious or political terms, royal family surnames by coincidence, no distinguishing word, deceptive activity indication, and conflict with already-reserved names or registered trademarks.
Can my trade name include my own name?
Yes. Professional licences typically require the founder's name in the trade name (e.g. John Smith Consulting). For LLCs, personal names are optional but allowed.
Does trade name approval protect my brand as a trademark?
No. Trade name reservation only prevents other UAE licensed businesses from using the same name. Trademark protection requires separate Ministry of Economy registration (AED 10,000 to AED 12,500 per class, 6 to 12 months, 10-year validity).
Can I change my trade name later?
Yes, through an amendment application to DET or the free zone authority. Cost AED 500 to AED 3,000 depending on authority. All signage, bank accounts and MOHRE records must be updated after the change.
